Board of Directors
Get Involved at a Leadership Level
Interested in taking a more active role in shaping the literary community in Southern Alberta? The Wordbridge Board of Directors is a collaborative, working board made up of individuals who are passionate about writing, community-building, and creative leadership.
This role is ideal for industry professionals—or those aspiring to be—who are looking to contribute their skills in a meaningful, ongoing way. As a board member, you’ll participate in decision-making, help guide initiatives, and work alongside an engaged, supportive team to bring projects to life.
While the work is purposeful and community-driven, it is also creative, collaborative, and genuinely enjoyable. We value reliability, initiative, and a willingness to contribute—and in return, we offer a space to grow, connect, and make a lasting impact.
Note: This role can be performed fully remotely. We would love more local members from Lethbridge, Alberta. However, if you’re not a local to Lethbridge, we still encourage you to sign up!
Board Member Expectations
- Commit to ongoing, active participation as part of a board.
- Attend monthly virtual meetings (1 hour) and the virtual Annual General Meeting (September 15, 7:00–8:00 PM, 1 hour), all of which is through Google Meet. The Annual General Meeting MUST be attended by all board members. Board members are expected to attend 80%+ of the monthly meetings, to the best of their ability. Please inquire about the timing of the monthly meeting as we strive to accommodate board member schedules as is feasible, and we understand scheduling issues do arise.
- Stay engaged with regular communication via Discord and email; must be able to participate via Discord as this is our primary communication tool. Discord is a free app for both mobiles and computers.
- Contribute to planning and execution of the annual Wordbridge Writers’ Conference (April), whether remotely or on site.
- Support year-round initiatives (optional; e.g., workshops, community programming, outreach, and special projects).
- Take ownership of tasks or projects aligned with your skills and interests.
- Collaborate respectfully and professionally with fellow board members.
- Represent Wordbridge in a positive, reliable, and community-minded way.
- Follow through on commitments and communicate proactively about capacity or availability. If absent or unreachable for six months or more, members will be removed from the board.
- This role involves a minimum commitment of 1 hour per month through required monthly meetings, with an average of 5-15 hours per month (with no maximum) depending on the projects or initiatives you wish to undertake. The time commitment is highest in February, March, and April in preparation for the Annual Conference, and lesser throughout the year.
- Board members are asked to commit to a minimum of one (1) year, with many members choosing to stay for two years or longer. Roles are designed to be cyclical, with an emphasis on continuity, succession planning, and knowledge-sharing. Where possible, incoming or interested board members may be mentored or trained in specific roles before stepping into them. This approach helps ensure smooth transitions, consistent leadership, and a well-supported, collaborative team environment.
